Common Motorcycle Slang Terms
Motorcycle culture has been around for decades, which means that it’s impacted everything from clothing styles to language. There are many motorcycle slang terms that you’ll want to know if you’re going to get invested as a rider, especially if you join a local motorcycle club or meet up with other riders. Here’s our quick glossary of terms that motorcyclists should know.
Parts of Your Bike
Ape-Hangers: Tall handlebars that require a rider to reach up for them. These handlebars are often found on cruisers and other “retro” style bikes.
Fairings: The metal deflectors that help to reduce wind fatigue by improving airflow over the bike.
Riding Terminology
Countersteering: The way that motorcycles are steered. Riders use their body weight to lean the bike left or right.
Hairpin: A tight turn that can be hard for beginning riders to accomplish.
Redline: This is the maximum number of revolutions per minute that your engine can hit before you damage it. Typically, this is indicated by a red line on your motorcycle’s tachometer.
Lifestyle Jargon
All the Gear, All the Time: “ATGATT” refers to wearing the right riding gear at all times to ensure your safety. A responsible motorcycle rider will look down upon anyone riding a motorcycle in a T-shirt and sneakers because they know how dangerous it is.
Hoon: This term is short for “hooligan,” and you’re probably aware that a hooligan isn’t the best thing to be. When it comes to motorcycling, a “hoon” is any rider who takes risks, rides recklessly or disrespects other motorists. You’re not going to make many friends if you’re a hoon, so don’t be one!
