Four-Wheeler Maintenance Tips
ATVs, also called quads or four-wheelers, are built to handle the roughest of off-road conditions and overcome all kinds of obstacles. However, all machines need occasional maintenance in order to perform at their best. That’s why the experts here at Windy City Motorcycle Company have created this guide to ATV maintenance.
Read the Owner's Manual
Your ATV’s owner’s manual is the ultimate authority when it comes to maintaining and repairing your quad. It should contain information on things like maintenance intervals, fluid specifications, and other details specific to your ATV model. The best way to avoid accidental damage to your ATV is by following the manufacturer’s recommendations at all times.
Check Fluid Levels Regularly
Fluids like oil, brake fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid play a key role in keeping your four-wheeler’s engine running. You’ll need to routinely check on these key fluids, topping them off and replacing them as needed. This will go a long way towards preventing damage and maintaining performance.
Clean the Air Filter
Your ATV’s engine needs a steady airflow to keep everything cool, but there is always a danger that contaminants like dirt and debris will get sucked in as well. That’s where the air filter comes in. You’ll need to inspect and clean/replace your ATV’s air filter on a routine basis. Clogged air filters can cause a number of different problems, including increased fuel consumption, reduced overall performance, and premature wearing on your engine’s components.
Maintain Proper Tire Pressure
Well-inflated ATV tires last longer and offer better traction. Use a tire pressure gauge to monitor the tire pressure on your ATV’s tires. The proper tire pressure range can be found in your owner’s manual or printed on the side of the tire.
Lubricate Moving Parts
Proper lubrication can reduce friction and prevent wear, allowing your ATV’s engine to last much, much longer. High-quality lubricant should be applied to the suspension pivot points, steering components, drive chain, and other moving parts. Components that are often exposed to dirt and water will need special attention in order to prevent corrosion.
